When it comes to car maintenance, sometimes the smallest points of maintenance can be the most important. Upkeep like changing your fuel filter annually can add years to the life of your car and protect it from costly damages. Massey Hyundai can help show you how to change your fuel filter yourself, or our factory-trained automotive technicians can perform fast maintenance service for you.

Relieve Fuel System Pressure

Start your car and let the engine idle in park. Find the fuel pump fuse, which should be located on your car's fuse box. Pull out the fuse or relay to relieve fuel system pressure. When the engine stops, you'll have pulled out the right fuse.

Fuel Lines

Next, you'll need to disconnect the fuel lines. You'll need two open-end wrenches for this operation. Put a rag over the fuel fitting in case there's still fuel in the lines! Keep the wrench on the filter stationary while you turn the other wrench counterclockwise, then do the same for the other side.

Remove the Filter

First, slide the fuel line off of the bolt holding it in place. The fuel filter will be locked into place with a clamp, but you can release it easily with a flat head screwdriver. The filter may still have some fuel left in it, so be careful when performing this task.

Switch Out the Filter

First, change the washers on the fuel filter. These are on the bolts that connect the filter to the fuel lines. Carefully match up the new washers to the old ones. Putting in the new fuel filters just means reversing the process you just performed. Then, reconnect the fuel lines and put back the relay or fuse you removed from the car.
