Is your windshield dirty and obstructed no matter how much your blades work? If so, it's time for a change. Massey Hyundai services the Hagerstown and Winchester area, and we're pleased to offer this guide to changing your windshield wipers.

When Should I Change My Wipers?

Most windshield wipers use soft plastic or rubber to clear your windshield of rain, ice, and debris. Many garages recommend that you change your windshield wipers every time you get your oil changed. Whether or not you keep this schedule, you should change your windshield wipers when they can no longer clear your windshield efficiently.

What Do I Need?

  • Two wiper blade inserts of the correct length to fit on your car. You can find this information in your owner's manual.
  • A pair of small or needle-nose pliers.
  • Put your vehicle in park and set the parking brake.

What Are the Steps?

First turn your key to the on position, but with the engine off. Then turn on the windshield wipers. When the blades are vertical on the windshield, turn the key back off again.

Pull away the metal wiper arms from the windshield. You'll feel them lock into the service position so you won't have to hold them up. If they don't automatically lock, pull out the locking tab at the base of the wiper arm where it's connected to the pivot.

Turn the blade to be at angle out from the wiper arm.

Squeeze the lock pin or lock tab on the bottom of the arm, which will release the wiper blade. This is where you may need to use the pliers to remove the blades. Slide it out and remove it from the wiper arm.

Slide the new wiper blade through the channel on the wiper arm. Pull the tab through the bottom of the arm in order to press it into place. It will be securely installed when you hear it click.
