While your brake lights may not seem like an important part of your new or used car, they're a crucial safety feature that let the cars behind you know when you're going to stop. This prevents rear collisions and dings to your bumper. If your brake light is out, you can change it yourself with this easy guide from Massey Hyundai.

Remove the Lens

The bulbs for your exterior lights are behind a colored lens attached to the body of your car. Most vehicles have a single assembly that allows you to remove the entire lens system, but some may have individual lenses. Once you've located the brake light that's out, find the screws holding the assembly in place and remove them with a Philips head screwdriver.

Remove the Bulb Housing

The light bulb sits in a bulb assembly, or housing, which is placed in a hole in the chassis. Carefully pull the housing out of its hole. It will only move a few inches, being wired in; you'll need to be careful not to pull too hard on the wires. There may be a removable outer cover on the assembly, which can be removed easily.

Unscrew the Bulb

The bulb will be held in place in the housing with a plug, which screws into the light assembly. Follow the wires to the back of the light and unscrew the corresponding bulb holder. It should only take a quarter turn before the bulb holder can be unscrewed and removed from its place.

Pull Out the Old Bulb

The old, dead bulb should pull easily out of the holder, or only require a small quarter turn to come out of its socket. Remove the old bulb and place the new one into the bulb holder, then replace the bulb housing and assembly.
