Inspect Your Car
You should inspect your car once a week to see what cleaning or protection it might need. Use direct sunlight or a bright light to check your car inside and out. Inspect headlamps for scratches, chips, and hazing on the glass. Check the lower trim and splash guards for salt, cracks, and road grime build-up. Your car may just need a thorough wash on a weekly basis to prevent grime from becoming embedded in the paint, or it may need more serious detailing. Sealants should be done every one to two years by a professional, but washing and waxing can be done easily in your driveway.
Exterior
Washing your car is easy. Use a soft round brush and at least two wash mitts or soft wash cloths, as well as a bucket of car wash shampoo and a bucket of plain water. Be sure to rinse out your cloths or mitts separately when you need to. Start at the center line of your car and start at the roof, working your way down. Use the soft brush to reach areas that you otherwise can't. After the wash is done, rinse your vehicle thoroughly. You should dry your vehicle with a blower, rather than letting it air dry, as air drying will leave the vehicle with water stains. To finish, spray a light mist of spray wax or sealant on the vehicle surface and wipe it dry with a thick, soft microfiber cloth. For cleaning windshield wiper blades, wipe them with a paper towel or cloth soaked in a mixture of ammonia and water.
Interior
It's important to reduce the amount of dust and grime on the inside of your car as well. Use a brush or foam sponge to clean the dust off your air vents, and make sure to wipe the dust off any hard or impermeable surfaces like leather or plastic. Use a vacuum to collect any dust that comes off so it doesn't settle elsewhere in the car. Remove any trash or debris from your car, and push up the front seats so you can retrieve anything that might have fallen under the seat. Make sure to remove and place your cabin air filter to cut down on dust and smells.
